5GResearch as a Service (5GRaaS) is a University Cloud Extranet Program, which allows multiple universities to interconnect and intra-connect their various colleges, to perform Research & Development (R&D) activities on 5G. 5GRaaS program will entitle the users to deploy various test-beds around IoT, Augmented Reality, and Virtual Reality use cases. These test-beds will be deployed across various colleges and will be interconnected using the 5GRaaS cloud platform.
5GRaaS cloud platform is a Networking as a Service (NaaS) based architecture, which capitalizes SD-WAN, RAN, and 5G services, as well as fosters an environment for 5G Research and Development.

An SD-WAN (or SDWAN) can connect several branch locations to a central hub office or cover multiple locations in a large campus such as a university campus. Because it is abstracted from hardware, it is more flexible and available than a standard WAN. SD-WAN is a wide-area network with a virtualized overlay, abstracting the software from the hardware. Its key features include network abstraction, WAN virtualization, policy-driven centralized management, and elastic traffic management. Its architecture can be cloud-based, cloud-based with a backbone, or on-premises only. Its benefits include simplified management, better network visibility, reduced cost, and less vendor lock-in.
5G RAN is a set of virtualized networking technologies with advanced capabilities when compared to previous RAN standards Virtualization separates the networking functions from the hardware they run on, allowing them to be changed as technology advances. This makes 5G infrastructure a type of virtual RAN (vRAN). 5G RANs are still in their early stages, even though recent reporting says 5G coverage has reached 75% of the United States population. What puts deployment and coverage at the early stage is because network speeds are still much slower than 5G standards said they would become.
